SENATOR Joel Villanueva lauded tennis star Alexandra “Alex” Eala for her historic performance at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, where she became the first Filipino to reach the fourth round, bringing pride to the Philippines.
“Alex Eala has distinguished herself as one of the finest athletes ever produced by the Philippines, rising through the ranks of professional tennis through years of exceptional skill, discipline, perseverance, and sportsmanship,” Villanueva said in his Proposed Senate Resolution No. 492.
He added that Eala has broken “longstanding barriers for Filipino athletes in international tennis” and established herself among the world’s elite through outstanding competitive achievement.
In his resolution, Villanueva highlighted that Eala earned the admiration of the international sporting community with her “fearless style of play, professionalism, and unwavering competitive spirit.”
He said Eala’s performance likewise strengthened the Philippines’ presence in international tennis, a sport long dominateed by players from traditional tennis nations.
Before reaching the Fourth Round of Wimbledon, the tennis sensation has achieved several milestones for Philippine tennis, including two WTA 125 singles titles. She also entered the tournament as the No. 29 seed, becoming the first Filipino tennis player in history to be seeded in the singles main draw of a Grand Slam tournament.
Eala’s accomplishments have inspired countless young Filipinos to pursue excellence in sports and showed that Filipinos can compete successfully at the highest levels of international competitions.
“Eala’s achievements exemplify the Filipino values of perseverance, discipline, humility, excellence, courage, and dedication, making her a source of inspiration for present and future generations of Filipinos,” Villanueva said.
