THE Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) urged a preemptive evacuation of people in the coastal communities following an 8.8 quake that struck Russia Wednesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The earthquake, which hit near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula at about 11:25 a.m. local time (00:25 BST), is believed to be one of the most powerful ever recorded.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n DILG <\/strong>Secretary Jonvic Remulla called on vulnerable coastal localities or those facing the Pacific Ocean to conduct an immediate evacuation following the strong tremor that struck off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n An information released by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) showed tsunami waves less than one meter in height are expected to reach the Philippine seaboard between 1:20 p.m. to 2;40 p.m. on July 30 and may persist for hours.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The information prompted the DILG chief to issue an advisory to local chief executives in these areas most likely be affected.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n These are the Batanes Group of Islands, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon and Catanduanes in Luzon; Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte and Southern Leyte in the Visayas and Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro in Mindanao.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n In its advisory, the DILG chief urged the concerned LGUs to also undertake critical preparedness measures such as establish evacuation routes, directional signs, and safe zones for at-risk communities; activate their respective Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs) and Incident Management Teams (IMTs); strictly implement actions based on \u201cOperation Listo\u201d and \u201cListong Pamayanan\u201d Tsunami Toolkit and coordinate closely with regional and provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (DRRMCs), DOST-PHIVOLCS and other relevant agencies.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Residents were also advised to remain vigilant and stay away from beaches and coastal waters until the official cancellation of the tsunami advisory by DOST-PHIVOLCS. <\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cPeople residing very near the shoreline are also strongly advised to move further inland as a precautionary measure. Boat owners are also told to secure their vessels and stay in deep water if already offshore,\u2019\u2019 the DILG said.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The DILG likewise directed its regional directors in Regions 2, 3, 4A, 5, 8, 11, and CARAGA to ensure all LGUs are on high alert and are closely coordinating with their respective Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (RDRRMCs).<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Meanwhile, t<\/strong>sunami alert prompts suspension of classes, gov’t work in E.
