A STRONG <\/strong>magnitude 7.8 earthquake on Monday morning (June 8, 2026) struck off the coast of Sarangani province jolting many parts of Mindanao and leaving scores dead and over a hundred wounded.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The quake, which occurred at\u00a0 7:37 a.m. Monday, triggered tsunami alerts in the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan and Australia. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The warnings were cancelled hours later.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Monday night said they are validating reports that at least 35 people were killed by the quake.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Of the reported fatalities, four were recorded in the Davao Region while 31 were from Soccsksargen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Officials said at least 134 have been injured and some 10,000 families were displaced.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Videos and images showed buildings collapsing, including a clip of a Jollibee fast food restaurant reduced to rubble.<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directed government agencies to immediately activate emergency response measures following a powerful earthquake that hit Mindanao.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a statement, Marcos said the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) have been tasked to oversee monitoring and response operations in areas affected by the earthquake and its aftermath.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The President also instructed the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to ensure the availability of relief supplies and prepare evacuation facilities for residents who may need to leave their homes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) was ordered to prepare for rapid damage assessments and the clearing of roads, bridges, and other vital infrastructure that could be affected by the disaster.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Malaca\u00f1ang assured that the government has sufficient funds to respond to the Mindanao earthquake.<\/strong><\/p>\n
