EIGHTY people on Friday were injured in a riot inside a detention center in San Mateo, Rizal.
According to Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) spokesperson Jail Chief Insp. Jayrex Bustinera, among those hurt were 60 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) and 20 members of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).
Bustinera said the 80 sustained minor injuries.
Prior to the riot, he said seven PDLs started a noise barrage inside the prison.
The inmates were allegedly opposing the cashless system in the jail facility.
The PDLs blocked the entry of food and began destroying the facilities.
Jail officers forced the unruly inmates to stop until the riot ensued.
BJMP personnel, and members of the Philippine National Police and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office- San Mateo worked together to diffuse the situation.
Bustinera urged the PDLs not to believe on fake news.
The jail official said those injured were given prompt medical attention and are now recovering.
