HUNDREDS of Catholic faithful on Sunday flocked to the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Church in General Trias City, Cavite to join the “Salubong” or the celebration of the resurrection of Christ.
“Salubong” is a Filipino tradition that dramatizes the reunion of Jesus and his grieving mother, Mary.
St. Francis of Assisi parish priest Rev. Fr. Oliver Genuino led the Easter Sunday Mass that marks the end of the Holy Week for the Christian church.
During Easter Sunday’ celebration, local parishioners and devotees lifted the statues of the resurrected Christ and the mourning Mary and passed them in two different ways of processions.
The men, in a happy celebration of the procession, were accompanied by the statue of the resurrected Jesus.
The women, who were in a procession sad and mournful, were accompanied by the mourning Mary wearing a black veil.
They arrived at the City Hall building in Plaza Rizal, where a small woman dressed as an angel played by Grade 10 pupil Jaira Fiona Estelle L. Dimag from Bgy. Pinagtipunan, removed the black veil from the statue of Mother Mary, indicating that the mourning is over.
The removal of the black veil was followed by the showering of flower petals and the singing of a Christian hymn.
A joyous procession took place, with a Karakol theme, to the historic church of the St. Francis of Assissi for the Easter Sunday mass.
