CARDINALS have chosen the next leader of the Catholic Church following the death of Pope Francis.
The next Pope will be the Catholic Church’s 267th leader.
Pope Francis popularly known as “The People’s Pope” died on April 21, 2025.
On Thursday, the temporary chimney atop the Sistine Chapel released a plume of white smoke, signaling that the 133 cardinals had reached a two-thirds majority vote to elect a new Pope.
Church bells rang and thousands of people at the St. Peter’s Square cheered as the white smoke billowed out of the chimney.
Crowds patiently awaited the arrival of the new Roman pontiff at the central window of St. Peter’s Basilica.
The new Pope was chosen after two days or on the third round of conclave voting.
