MARIVELES, Bataan – A pregnant woman and her daughter on Saturday died while several others were injured when a closed van malfunctioned and rammed several houses and a tricycle before hitting maritime cadets who were then walking on MAAP road in this town.
A report to Police Regional Office 3 director Brig. Gen. Jess Mendez identified the fatalities as Katrina Mejes, 32, who was said to be three months pregnant, and her 11-year-old daughter Breccia Kate Mejes, both residents of Sitio Marina in Bgy. Alas-asin.
An investigation showed the Isuzu closed van driven by 60-year-old Herminio Jr. Nicolas of Paombong, Bulacan was traveling at high speed when the driver allegedly lost control of the wheels.
The van rammed several roadside structures, including houses, and a tricycle, before hitting the cadets who were then walking on the road.
The mother and her daughter were said to be passengers of the tricycle struck by the van.
All victims were rushed to the Mariveles Mental Wellness and General Hospital, where the mother and her daughter died while undergoing treatment.
Responding lawmen arrested the van driver who is facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, multiple physical injuries, and damage to property.
