PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has extended his condolences to the government and people of Colombia following the powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the country on Monday (August 10), leaving at least 132 people dead.
In a social media post, President Marcos expressed the Philippines’ solidarity with Colombia as it deals with the devastation caused by the earthquake.
“The Philippines conveys our heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Colombia for the lives lost and the devastation caused by the powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake,” the President said.
“As a nation along the Pacific Ring of Fire, Filipinos deeply understand the pain and challenges brought by earthquakes. We stand in solidarity with Colombia as they rise through this ordeal, rebuild livelihoods and communities, and recover completely. Our thoughts are with all those affected,” he added.
Colombia has declared a state of emergency following one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the country in recent years.
The magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck at 7:34 a.m. local time, with its epicenter near San José del Palmar in western Colombia, about 280 kilometers west of Bogotá, the country’s capital.
The earthquake caused widespread damage, prompting emergency response and recovery operations.
