PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday directed different government agencies to intensify preparations, especially after Typhoon Inday entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) Wednesday morning, and called on the public to remain alert.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), in its weather update, said the weather system was located east of Northern Luzon.
In response to the President’s directive, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) led by Chairman Don Artes conducted clean-up operations of drainage systems and waterways particularly in areas clogged with garbage.
The agency’s 73 pumping stations are also on standby in case of a heavy downpour due to intensified habagat caused by Typhoon Inday entering the PAR.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) also carried out various preparatory measures, especially in Cagayan Valley, said Castro, adding the agency already prepositioned equipment such as trucks, backhoes, chainsaws, and other materials in case of disaster.
Department of Health (DOH) regional offices were also put on alert as part of the preparatory measures for Typhoon Inday, while the Health Emergency Management Bureau issued a weather alert to centers for health development.
In addition, according to Castro, the DOH also readied a contingency plan to ensure the continuity of health services to the public.
The Palace official also said that based on DOH data, there is a total of P36.6 million worth of medicines, hygiene kits, and cleaning equipment already prepositioned in various locations.
