VETERAN journalist and former Publishers Association of the Philippines ( PAPI) President Emeritus Juan “Johnny” Dayang on Tuesday night was shot dead in his home in Kalibo, Aklan.
The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) condemned the killing of the 89-year-old journo.

PTFoMS Executive Director Undersecretary Jose Torres Jr., said the Philippine National Police (PNP) is actively leading the investigation to identify and arrest those responsible for the heinous crime.
“We are closely coordinating with all concerned agencies to ensure the immediate resolution of this case,” Torres said.
Dayang was watching a television when shot from a distance by an assailant.
He was rushed to the Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
“We stand in solidarity with the media community as we mourn the passing of Mr. Dayang, a figure regarded as a pillar of Philippine journalism whose contributions greatly enriched our democratic discourse,” said Torres.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Dayang during this difficult time,” he added.
“His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of journalists in their pursuit of truth and justice,” Torres noted.
The PTFOMS called on the public to remain vigilant and to support efforts that uphold press freedom and protect media professionals in the Philippines.
The National Press Club of the Philippines (NPC) also strongly denounced the killing of Dayang.
“We call on the Presidential Task Force on Media Security and other concerned authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and bring those responsible for Mr. Dayang’s death to justice.” NPC president Leonel Abasola said.
Police are still looking into the motive behind the killing.
